Gary Neville criticizes two Man Utd players following Chelsea draw

United appeared poised to secure their second consecutive victory under interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, but their fate was sealed when Bruno Fernandes scored a crucial penalty in the 70th minute.

The Red Devils were second best for much of the game until that point but were handed a spot-kick after Robert Sanchez tripped Rasmus Hojlund.

There were huge celebrations from the Manchester United team and coaching staff but Chelsea were back level less than five minutes later as Moises Caicedo smashed home from a corner.

The draw means United have now won just three of their first 10 Premier League games this season and remain in the bottom-half of the table, while Chelsea move up to fourth, above London rivals Arsenal.

Manchester United decided to sack Erik ten Hag last week and his replacement, Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim, will arrive at Old Trafford on November 11.

Speaking after his former club drew 1-1 with Chelsea, Neville said on his podcast: ‘I’m not going to dig Rashford and Garnacho out but I am…

‘They are two players who have come through the ranks and with that comes some credit. The fact you’re an academy player, you get a level of buy-in from the fans because of that, there’s a level of enthusiasm towards then.

‘But when I watch Saka, Trossard and Martinelli for Arsenal, Silva and Foden for Man City, or I watch players at Liverpool… I watch them all scurrying back and harassing players and doubling back.

‘I’ve watched [Malo] Gusto run forward there in the first half, we couldn’t believe how much space he got.

‘The first ethic is you’ve got to work hard. I’m not saying Rashford and Garnacho don’t work hard but they could work harder, I know that.

‘When I played, the defensive work the players in those positions put in resulted in rewards at the other end of the pitch. The harder you work the luckier you get.

‘They think they’re working hard and applying themselves but we’ve got to get back to the idea that you’re all in it together.

‘I’ve got to point towards Garnacho and Rashford today and say they can do a lot more off the ball. I’m not interested in what they can do on the ball. I’m interested in the spirit to fight for the team all the way through the match.

‘I’m not saying they did badly today but I watch the other wide players in the league do a lot more than them.’

Neville wants Amorim to play front-foot football after taking over at Manchester United and says the Red Devils must stop playing like ‘underdogs’.

‘This is Manchester United’s worst ever start to a Premier League season,’ the Old Trafford legend added.

‘It’s been a woeful 10 games and the performances are awful. You cannot disconnect performance from results and that’s why, when I look at Ruben Amorim, I think about what he needs to do in the job.

‘I can’t even think about winning the title, that’s miles away. Just think about getting the best out of the players that are here, the ones that he signs in the future, and get the team to play higher up the pitch so they look more like a compact unit and like the other top teams.

‘I’m not just talking about Man City, Liverpool and Arsenal, I’m talking about the likes of Brighton and Tottenham who are able to push up the pitch and look aggressive and on the front foot.

‘You know Manchester United’s a front-foot club, you know it’s the club of attack, attack, attack and it’s nothing like that at this moment. It’s really disappointing and the new manager can’t come in quickly enough.

‘Job number one has got to be to stop this rot of players coming to Manchester United, who were fancied because other clubs wanted them as well and who have not been able to achieve the levels of potential they demonstrated before they signed.

‘So, with the players he inherits – which he’s going to be stuck with for the next eight months – he has to try and get the maximum out of them and that’s going to be a big job.’
